Letter to the Home Secretary to stop a repeat of the 2001 Bradford Riots (EDL)

Lucy Cartwright | 02.08.2010 17:41 | Anti-racism | Culture | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Courtesy of the English Defence League, Bradford could be hit by 5000 racist thugs later this month in an attempt to cause major public disorder and create racial tensions.

A letter has been written to the Home Secretary and the Chairs of the Home Affairs Select Committee and the Communities and Local Government Committee urging them to take action against the EDL coming to Bradford. We are trying to stop at up to 5,000 EDL thugs descending on the city who have a single goal of whipping up inter-community tensions.

We have a massive chance of banning the EDL from Bradford. Whether we can depends on whether we can exert enough pressure on the Home Secretary and this is why we need as many people to sign our letter.

You can sign the letter here:  http://action.hopenothate.org.uk/StopTheEDL

When you’ve signed, please circulate this round the web, update your facebook status with it and share it on your news feed! We need as many people to sign as possible.

I think Lucy you are on the wrong website with your requests.

Please fuck off back to Facebook where the home secretary probably has a page because you are barking up the wrong tree here just to bring you back to reality. Do you really think that by contacting that idiot she will effect change. Thats such a middle class concept and what a load of bollocks so please take your ridiculous ideas and refrain from blocking up the newswire with them... Ta.

Stop being a prick, it's worth a shot at least! Indymedia isn't the sole preserve of militant anarchists. I'm not middle class and I totally support banning the rally. Are you even aware that Cameron has already brought up banning the EDL completely? If people unite enough behind this, as in all anti fash groups, then they will have no choice but to listen. If it doesn't work then fine go and have a demo but stop being a moron and actually sign something that could help stop the inevitable rioting.

This just proves that Islam isn't a peaceful religion...

...Because everybody is so worried about the Muslims rioting again.

If they were a religion of peace they wouldn't rise to the EDL provocation but, they will and once again the Muslims will use the opportunity to attack any white person they see because they're nothing but a bunch of hate-filled racists.

Could backfire

The trouble with calling on the State to ban something is that you are setting a precedent, possibly, for them to ban any and every other rally or protest or march that they think might cause a 'public order' problem. That includes antifascist demos! And others besides. It is not a good move to campaign for a ban.

and that just proves you're an EDL troll and a bigot.

No ones worried about the devout practising Muslims but the young kids who have more in common culturally with gangster rappers. It's not the Muslims who understand their religion but the Muslims who know little about their religion. It doesn't matter how peaceful someone is if you are pushed and pushed and pushed like the Muslim community has been by the EDL for over a year now then sooner or later most people will want to fight back. The EDL are deliberately trying to incite a race war. They are all over Facebook calling for a 'civil war' and spreading Islamophobic propaganda. You know exactly what the effect will be to go into Bradford and that's why you're doing it. So doesn't this prove that the EDL aren't the peaceful anti extremists you all claim to be.

I understand your concern but this won't be the first demo to get banned in this country so the precedent has already been set. In fact demo's get turned down all the time. The EDL have always sneaked round legislation in the past by having 'static demo's' which can only be banned by the home secretary, however there's rumours that they have applied for a march this time so technically the local council and police may be able to ban it anyway, however this is just speculation at this time. It's all about the wording really. The ban needs to focus on incitement of religious and racial hatred not public disorder.
