Work has been continuing at EcoWorks with the Straw Bale building in Nottingham. The building, now being fully enclosed with the main doors having being constructed and fitted All window frames fitted last year. Earlier this year, guttering and assorted woodwork has been completed.

In the last work days there, there has been continued activity in adding clay slip to the inside walls. Firstly, by breaking up lumps of clay.  Then forcing these smaller lumps through a grid to make them yet smaller. On adding water, needing the colloid even further, ending up with a consistancy of double-cream!.  Together with hesian, this is applied to the straw as a first layer.  On drying, further coats are applied, eventually leaving a stable, finished surface.

So, dear readers, if you have enjoyed watching the progress of this building being constructed ..... how about getting out from behind your computer screen, and get up to EcoWorks, and volunteer your services.

All could have been done a lot earlier, if a bunch of 'already-skilled' people had just got on with it. But, it was generally descided that by involving many volunteers, folks might go away, and having been inspired by the project, and with a bit of hands-on experience ....... have ideas and help others think about what they could do with other sustainable projects in their own areas.
