No Austerity Budget: Market Square Protest

Richard Buckwell | 18.06.2010 14:28

WE WON'T PAY FOR THEIR CRISIS!

Notts. Trade Union Council is fully backing the call by the Right to Work Campaign for a national programme of protests in every town and city throughout the country on Tuesday, 22 June (Austerity Budget Day).

Individual workplaces are calling lunchtime protests, but it is clear that the coming cuts mean much more than a few public sector workers losing their jobs (and that's bad enough!). Through cuts in welfare and health, and increased taxes, it will affect us all.

For example: the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for college students is under threat, and the Refugee and Migrant Justice organisation (with offices in Nottingham) is being forced into liquidation; not to mention a likely rise in VAT. Who's not affected by that? That's why we're calling for a:

Mass Protest in the Old Market Square from 5:30pm on Tuesday, 22 June (Austerity Budget Day).

They used our tax money to bail out the bankers. Now they want us to cough up again with our jobs, public services, and yet more taxes. We're not having it!

Notts. Trade Union Council Secretary,
Richard Buckwell

25% DUMBER

I was at this protest and it was crap, there was only about 20 people there...what's happening with everyone? Isn't this a important moment for people to meet and organize? I'm just really sad that all this cuts are being made and people just carry on... england is getting 25% dumber than it already is!
Just because some guys we don't agree with are organizing this demo, doesn't mean that we don't agree in some points.
Anarchists, Socialists, Democrats, even Fascists might have one thing they agree on, isn't that what revolution is about?

Which protest where you at yesterday? I could name more than 20 people there!!! Even the BBC said "...at least 100...", and we all know what the BBC are like when it comes to figures on demos.

Personally I'd have said over the two hours, given tbe people that left early and arrived late, probably around 150 would be accurate.

I do agree with you on one thing though - we could all do with working a little closer. We don't agree on everything, but I think we agree on much more than you might expect.

I think the last commenter highlighted why people stayed at home...

...by advertising an SWP meeting. This stank of their rancid politics. And besides, everyone knows that standing in market square with a placard turns does fuck all about anything.

The best placard said something about Greek style resistance. Now there's a campaign that would get noticed.

There are better ways to protest

And so it begins...
