A powerful exhibition of art by and about refugees & asylum seekers. Launch: 6.30pm Friday 11th – then open 11am onwards every day except Sunday till Saturday 19th. Part of Bristol’s Refugee Week.
Sat 12th – Sat 19th (not Sunday) 11am onwards – free entry!

Celebrating Sanctuary is an exhibition of powerful art by and about refugees and asylum seekers. Four floors of this beautiful Georgian building are given over to work by an international palette of artists, contributing work from painting, drawing and photography to sound installations, projections and interactive and digital media. Artists include Shula, Janet Roome, Wiracha Daochai, Fiona Kam Meadley, Ricky Romain, Terry Piper, Houri Ghamian, Heather Fallows, Ugyen Choephell, Tom King, Annie Davenport, the Bristol Bike Project, Bristol Refugee Rights Welcome Centre and photographs of Iranian street protest. The results of workshops that Heather Fallow & Ricky Romain have been running with St Michael on the Mount Primary School will be on display. The exhibition is evidence that the human spirit is capable of not just enduring but sometimes of transcending hardship. Art speaks the words we cannot say!

Additional activities throughout the week:
Scribble Wall – a place for your thoughts about home, marginalisation and City of Sanctuary. As the week unfolds a dialogue develops!
Map of Origins – a World map invites you to put a dot on your place of origin or your family roots. The results are surprising!
Sanctuary Room – a display and installation introducing Bristol Caravanserai’s Hospitality Network for Destitute Asylum Seekers. Do you have room for a refugee?

The Celebrating Sanctuary exhibition takes place at the Pierian Centre, 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA. Entry is free, and it’s open Sat 12th – Sat 19th (but not Sunday) from 11am onwards. The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of free debates, workshops and cultural events – for details contact 0117 924 4512 or info@pieriancentre.com or go to www.pieriancentre.com.
