Activists from West Yorkshire Animal Rights Group today took part in the national day of action against Willmott Dixon and their involvement in the construction of a new animal testing laboratory at the University of Leicester.

We were prepared for an afternoon long demo at their Leeds Office (Willmott Dixon House, Cliffe Park, Bruntcliffe Road, Morley, Leeds, LS27 0RY – Tel: 0113 2383 283) however, being the cowards they are WD decided to close for the day and send all their staff home. As a result, we arrived at the empty office but still let all their neighbouring companies know what they are involved in by leafletting the whole business park.

It was decided that instead we should have a day of action against NG Bailey, the main subcontractors for construction of the new animal lab and moved onto the Bailey Training Academy and Leeds Office (7 Brown Lane West, Leeds, LS12 6EH – Tel: 0113 243 9921). THey were obviously not expecting demo’s, but a noisy one we had as everybody around was informed about the dirty business of building a laboratory for beagles and rodents they were taking part in. Staff and visitors were supportive, with many giving thumbs up. Not being able to resist a tour of the site, we headed around all the different buildings at the training academy and chanted against NG Bailey.

Next we moved onto NG Bailey’s other Leeds Office (Bailey Johnson, Wyther Lane, Kirkstall Leeds, LS5 3BT – Tel: 0113 275 9048) to inform them about the new laboratory. Arriving at rush hour, hundreds of cars were passing by and many gave support and took notice of the demo. A large banner nobody could miss was tied across NGB’s fence and chants of “200 animals to die in pain – NG Bailey are to blame” echoed around the area.

As NG Bailey have their main focus as a company in West Yorkshire, with five seperate offices including the main one, we will be focusing heavily on them over the coming months with regular noisy demonstrations. We also intend to return to Willmott Dixon in a number of occasions over the coming weeks.
