Controversial Anti-Shell Protester Maura Harrington has died

It has been reported that well known "Shell To Sea"campaigner & Mayo native Maura Harrington has passed away.

Harrington played a prominent role in the campaign against the proposed construction of a natural gas pipeline through Rossport, County Mayo, Republic of Ireland by the international petroleum giant Royal Dutch Shell. She became the face of the so-called Shell to Sea campaign & was jailed a number of times on charges such as trespass, assaulting a police officer, as well as "lunging" towards Irish President Mary McAleese. - For which she was found guilty of a public order offense. A former school teacher Harrington was reportedly taken by ambulance paramedics to Mayo General Hospital but passed away en route. It is believed that she died as a result of a suspected heart attack.Harrington is survived by her husband Naoise Ó Mongain. More information will be provided as soon as it comes in.

Hey Aine, if this is true then it's a very sad day for all in Rossport and the Shell to Sea campaign. I'm quite surprised by the fact that this story appears to have been gifted to Indymedia UK before it is even published on your own website, let alone indymedia Ireland or the Shell to Sea website. Verification please...
