Controversial Shell to Sea Protester Maura Harrington has reportedly died.

Harrington played a prominent role in the campaign against the proposed construction of a natural gas pipeline through Rossport County Mayo, Ireland by the international petroleum giant Royal Dutch Shell. She became the face of the Shell to Sea campaign & was imprisioned a number of times on charges such as trespass, assaulting a Garda, as well as "lunging" towards Irish President Mary McAleese - for which she was found guilty of a public order offence. A former school teacher Harrington was reportedly taken by ambulance paramedics to Mayo General Hospital but passed away en route. It is believed that she died as a result of a suspected heart attack.Harrington is survived by her husband Naoise Ó Mongain. More information will be provided as soon as it comes in.
