You're never going to get a fair system. All systems benefit those in power because it is they who design them, they who control them, and they who can override them with emergency laws.
Don't endorse the state. Don't vote, organise.

That's how it is when democracy is working properly. The wrongheaded folks get to vote and have their views represented too. Democracy isn't about making good, wise, just, etc. etc. decisions but when working properly, just the decisions that "the people" want, for good or for ill.
There are other consequences of a more democratic proportional representation system (with low threshold). It destroys the "glue" holding parties together since as long as both resulting factions remain above the threshold no severe cost associated with party splits over ideological differences or personality clashes among the leadership. Especially those of us on the "left" need to keep that in mind as by our history we tend to fragmentation and poor cooperation between factions.

PR = BNP MPs
Lib Dems = Tories (and that's official, bud)
The Hung Parliament
Non-proportional Representation = Labour, Tory and LibDem MPs

Yes, I am anti-fascist, and no, I don't vote.
But by any standards, representation as a proportion of the number of votes is much more fair than the existing system, even if both systems will always be controlled by the rich anyway.
So, I have no illusions about PR making the world a happy place, but at least it will throw some spanners in the works, so good luck to the PR people.
