BNP electoral performance in the East Midlands

Statsman | 11.05.2010 15:20 | Anti-racism

These statistics should give anti-fascists an idea about where the BNP are picking up votes in the region, and how their performance compares with the rest of the country.

Nationally the BNP won 563,743 votses, 1.9% of total votes cast, which is up 1.2% on the last general election. The significant increase is likely due to the fact that they stood many more candidates in this election than in 2005.

Most of these votes come from England where they got 532,333 votes (2.1%), up 1.3%.

The BNP vote in the East Midlands was above average: 69,706 votes (3.1%), up 2.6%. This is not as high as regions such as Yorkshire & Humber or the North West but is higher than most of the south of England, where the BNP are weak. In the constituencies in which the party stood a candidate they won an average 4.2% of the vote.

In Derbyshire, the BNP got 14,063 votes, 3.0% of the total and 5.0% of the constituencies in which they stood.

In Leicestershire the BNP vote was 22,479 (4.4%).

In Lincolnshire the party got 13,614 votes (3.9%).

In Nottinghamshire the total was 12,747 (2.5% of the total and 4.0% of constituencies contested).

In Northamptonshire, the party won 6,803 votes (2.0% of the total and 3.5% of seats contested).

An analysis of the results by constituency shows that the highest votes for the BNP were in areas on the M1 corridor on the Derbyshire and Notts borders. The party got 7.0% of the vote in Amber Valley, 6.0% in Bolsover, 5.8% in Ashfield and 4.9% in Erewash. They also did well in West Leicestershire polling 6.5% in Leicestershire North West, 6.0% in Leicester West, 5.8% in Charnwood and 4.5% in Bosworth. Although the party generally did poorly in the bigger cities, they won 5.8% of the vote in Nottingham North and 4.4% in Derby North.
