Peoples assembly, parliament square, Churchill day of action and focus circle

This is what democracy looks like | 11.05.2010 01:34

Daring democracy villagers climb high to make their point, then get into a focus meeting and tea, make tea NOT WAR

Today at the peoples assembly in parliament square, direct action was taken to redecorate the statue of Churchill with a vest sign saying "Bring our troops home and on the back it read honour the soldiers", the point was made of respecting the soldiers of our forces, but not respecting the polliticians who send us into illegal wars.
The first set of diplomatic support group police who came said the sign was tatty, so a smarter version was produced, and re hung. Then another set of police turned up and found they were in a minority as most assembled around them liked the sign.
They seemed very reluctant to arrest, perhaps as this would attract more media,

The Sun news paper turned up and were fed a few positive lines ,we wil see how they spin it,we were told by a camper that the Sun has also been running a bring troops back campaign,...we shall see, the media circus is about to go off.

There then followed the 7 pm camp focalised meeting which lasted for an hour and discussed how to focus and organise the camp, upcoming events workshops and talks, setting up logistics, peoples ideas and actions for the future.
We will try to send regular updates each day as things progress,
The meet agreed to arrange food times, breakfast club camp focus 10am, 12 noon mid day open circle /focus meet, and focalised circle 7 pm.
Also to arrange a time table of workshops/talks etc. some ideas were:

There will be a Solutions brainstorm and workshop wednesday 3pm
A stand up Comedy workshop
Sharing songs evening
Tai Chi soon
Proportional representation what is it
What does democracy mean to you.
Guerilla gardening Saturday bring plants
Permaculture
Renewable Energy
People were invited to share skills and offer workshops/talks

It was mentioned that there was going to be a massive climate vigil with candles and art event on this saturday. http://www.campaigncc.org/ people had gone from the village to network with campaign against climate change.

It was mentioned strongly about the need to build bridges between all groups,Unity through diversity,
There is a rainbow alliance /coalition growing and evolving in parliament square.

The message was passed on through people who had been to Copenhagen Climate summit that all of the grassroots networks, indigenous networks and untold other groups had called for Peoples Assemblies to be set up worldwide throughout June.

Ex soldiers who have served in Iraq and other fronts spoke passionately,as well as relatives who have family members on the frontlines of Afghanistan.
An older gentleman who had said he had been alive before a lot of those present were born and who had worked with CND for decades wished the peoples assembly luck.
These are just some of stories coming through, come visit and help network it in any way u can.
Regular updates available soon ,when tech support gets more on da case.

Unity through diversity

This particular action was carried out by relatives of military personell, supported by ex miitary the sentiments on th banner reflected those individuals opinions.the article aimed to raise awareness of some of the good work and diversity at the assembly. Networking some of the bigger issues events etc.to encourage action from a diversity of people. Not to fall into the divide and rule trap. This is an important time and through Copenhagen networks peoples assemblies are called for across the world, the hope is that the bigger picture can be seen and action taken, unity through diversity.

It appears that a lot of these 'peace' groups have only popped up as a result of the increase in deaths of British personnel in Afghanistan and were criminally silent before this (i.e when only Afghans were being murdered) A major issue with this is that when the war is going 'well' or even when it first begins these groups will remain silent whether they agree or disagree with the war so as to maintain the high morale of the troops. Their selfish and one dimensional outlook does no good to a movement for peace and freedom.

Sorry mate but I'm afraid you are doing nothing more than illustrating your own lack of action. Don't tell me what others have been doing, tell me what you have been doing. If its nothing then you have your answer, don't you?

So critically examining one organisation must mean that I spend all day on the sofa. Brilliant

I wouldn't really say your last comment is critical analysis Capital T. Just an off-hand comment much like many that have been made before. I'm not getting at you fella/missus, just trying to point out that this kind of comment doesn't do much for people, not very inspiring and all that.
