Help Elect Salma Yaqoob as an MP

Mary | 22.04.2010 23:11 | Birmingham

Salma Yaqoob is a councillor for Birmingham Sparkbrook ward and the Respect Party prospective parliamentary candidate for the Birmingham Hall Green constituency. The Hall Green constituency consists of the Hall Green, Sparkbrook and Springfied wards.

Help Elect Salma Yaqoob

Salma's campaign for Respect in Birmingham Hall Green got off to a fantastic start.

1,000 people attended her election rally, built largely by word of mouth, and Lynn Jones, the retiring Labour MP has attacked the Labour candidate while endorsing Salma! The Labour candidate, Roger Godsiff has gone to ground, refusing to publicly campaign, and as Yahoo news reports, following Godsiff's no-show at a packed hustings:
One prominent Labour activist in the audience, who asked not to be named, expressed disappointment at Mr Godsiff's decision not to attend and said there had been many defections of Labour activists to Respect.

Meanwhile, the Lib Dems are reduced to lying and saying that Respect came fourth in the area in the 2009 Euro elections, so cannot win (Respect didn't even stand in that election, and the Lib Dem's candidate Jerry Evans is pretending in a typical bit of Lib Dem dishonest spin that the Green vote is the same as Respect's)

Salma has campaigned in the interests of small business on Stratford Road, pointing out how the banks have failed them, despite the banks themselves being in receipt of public money.

Salma is going through the constituency like a force of nature, and speaking to large numbers of voters literally every few days. At Friday prayers last week she addressed about 500 people at mosques in the constituency on the theme of social justice. It is literally unheard of for a woman to do this. And her campaign is still only warming up.

A victory for Salma will put a marker down
* for those opposed to the cuts agenda
* for the anti-war movement
* against Islamaphobia and racism.

She can win. And that's all more likely with your support.

That is why we are putting out a national call for all supporters and sympathisers to come to Birmingham.

Meet 12.30pm Saturday – 24th April - and Sunday 25th April
95 Walford Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham B11 1NP.

Religion

Why would you want to vote for anyone who believes in these fantasy religions, which promise better things after we're dead: islam, christianity, judaism, buddhism, all constructed by the people in power to control other people.

Such bullshit! You might as well believe in Santa Clause and the fairies!

Live and love in the present. Heaven is here and now!

Don't wait until you're dead!!! This is not a dress rehearsal!

Why is this on hear?

Salma Yaqoob is using her identity as a means to mobilise people to vote for her. Because she is a muslim she spends most of her time mobilising muslims to vote for her because she is a muslim and nothing else. This sort of identity politics is what have given the BNP a green light, as many ask "who represents white people?" - in steps the BNP and we have the increase of social segregation and isolation. Multiculturalism ( i.e. ethno-segregation ) manages the demands of the working class as ethic/religious demands, who need representation by people from those "communities" - what you get is fragmentation and undermining class consciousness, what you get is inter competing factions that instead of relating on our material conditions, relate through religion, ethnicity, x-y-z culture.

The Left exploit this by using muslims like in Respect. The political islamists like Islamic Forum of Europe use this in Whitechapel to gain political influence and power. The BNP use this in places like Barking and Stoke. Both need to be opposed and a visible alternative to their identity, racist, and segregation politics needs to emerge.

It's a bit much to expect Indymedia to virtually ignore the entire election, no? Let's be honest: some candidates running for the elections have greater connections to grassroots campaigning than others - and this is why this is on here, for good or for bad.
