Statement in defence of Bolon Ajaw from the national meeting of the UK Zapatista Solidarity Network

Edinburgh

17th April 2010

We view with great concern the attacks by the paramilitary group OPPDIC on the Zapatista village of Bolon Ajaw, near Agua Azul, Chiapas, in particular the shooting of villagers including children, on the 6th of February 2010.

We express our total solidarity with the people of Bolon Ajaw in their defence of Madre Tierra and we hold the Mexican Government and the State Authorities responsible for any attacks that may be made against them.

We are aware that the attacks on Bolon Ajaw are not random events but are carried out by state-backed paramilitaries as part of a government strategy of repression and war against the indigenous communities.

We demand that the Government and State Authorities respect the indigenous people’s right to Autonomy.
