#248 | We don’t have a budget, we have rage
Friday, April 16, 2010

The news is coming in from corporate media outlets: wealthy Greeks are flocking to London, cash-in-hand, ready to buy million-pound houses in their attempt to transfer their bank deposits out of the country in time. “Budget? I don’t have a budget” declared one of them to a stunned estate-agent – he just wanted to get “his wealth” out on time. “We don’t have a budget” repeated the chorus of Albanian builders in one of the Olympic work-sites of 2004, working as they were for one of the tens of companies that miraculously went “bust” right after the Games, leaving them with no compensation and so, no budget. “I have no budget”, blurted the 3-euros-an-hour waiter “neither have I”, responded the 4-euros-an-hour architect.

“We don’t have a budget” we sang in thousands in Athens last night, “only the passion to see Marios set free – the passion for all of us to be freed”. Welcome to the no-budget country, then: the rich are flocking out of the place, leaving the rest of us with thousands-upon-thousands of cops and anger for our stolen lives. Athens, Greece, April 16 2010 – now only a few days Before the International Monetary Fund.
