Communities in Resistance – Opposing New Coal Together

Coal Action Scotland | 09.04.2010 15:12 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Health

Saturday 8th May 2010, 10:30-18:30, St. Brides Centre, Douglas, South Lanarkshire

Despite the Scottish government’s ambitious Climate Change Bill, the coal industry in Scotland grows day by day as companies profit while the communities who are directly affected by this are ignored.

We believe in the power of community and that people can combine forces and work together to resist the many negative aspects of coal; from the destruction of local wildlife habitats and community health to the global effects of climate change.

Are you concerned about new coal developments in your area?
Are you part of an anti coal group or project?
Are you interested in working together with other like-minded people to strengthen our resistance against the coal industry?

This event will bring together communities who are fighting against new coal in their area, with a view to sharing information so as to broaden and strengthen campaigns against new coal in the UK. Throughout the day we hope to provide a forum for people to share experiences, network and make links.

Topics and questions we would like to cover/explore include:
- How to get more people involved in campaigns against new coal in the UK
- Opposing planning proposals: what works and what doesn’t
- Reflecting on strategies we have tried and their effectiveness
- Direct action and occupation of proposed coal sites
- A round-up of new coal projects in Scotland and the UK

The event will take place in Douglas, South Lanarkshire – rooting it in an ongoing community struggle – and will be widely publicised throughout the UK and open for anyone to attend.
