Walk to unite faiths in celebration of multi-faith Sheffield

Sheffield Peace Walk 2010 | 09.04.2010 12:04 | Anti-racism | Sheffield

Sheffield residents of all faiths and none are to take part in a walkabout of the city’s places of worship. The sixth annual ‘Peace Walk’ will be a celebration of Sheffield’s diverse communities and a show of unity and solidarity in opposition to the racist politics of the British National Party and English Defence League, who seek to divide our city.

The walk is taking place on Sunday, 25th April, leaving St. Cuthbert’s Church in Fir Vale at 2pm and arriving at Al-Rahman Mosque in Burngreave at around 3:30pm. Participants will observe a moment of prayer or reflection at each of the seven places of worship along the route. All are welcome to join

“It is important that different faith communities recognise the threat from racism and come together to oppose it by celebrating our multi-faith city,” says Abdool Gooljar, President of the Islamic Society of Britain (South Yorkshire). “By joining the Peace Walk, we are showing that those of us who wish to live in harmony with our neighbours are the majority.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God”, says Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield, quoting Jesus Christ. “Peace is a rich concept in the Christian scriptures. It is more than the absence of conflict but the presence of health and wholeness in an individual and in a society. There are many ways to share in peace making. The annual peace march is one of these ways as people of faith from different background come together in faith and solidarity together to demonstrate our care for one another and our determination not to be divided as neighbours in this city.”

"The Peace Walk is a very important signal to the city that people from different faith traditions are able to live and work alongside one another,” says Vernon Marsh, Chair of Sheffield Methodist District. “By walking together, we demonstrate that we are able to relate positively and constructively to each another, to talk together, to listen to one another, to form friendships and to engage in action for the good of the wider community.”
