Losing plot

I've been made aware of a comment on a now deleted post about Climate Camp, that moderators track IP addresses. I thought the whole point was anonymity and wish to open a debate about this.
Below is what is stated on Indymedia's website. If this post does not appear it will be obvious to em that Indymedia is censoring things, which it claims not to do, and are therefore no better or worse than the mainstream media.

IP Address Logging
Every computer on the web has an IP address. The IP adresses of remote users can be logged by servers. Through these logs, people's activities can be traced when they are matched with records from ISP's about who is has been allocated any given IP address at any time.

All the web servers that are used for the UK Indymedia web site are set up not to log IP adresss. This ensures the privacy of people who are browsing the site and posting news and comments to it. However, it is technically possible for networks between the servers and users to log IPs — if you are concerned about privacy need to ensure your anonomity please see the security page for more information about measures you can take.

This's obviously a load of crap. The article was a repost of a Daily Mail article and was thus hidden, not deleted, in line with the Editorial Guidelines.

IP Logging

The post was left up a long time because the subject was interesting (Ben and Agi flying to Bolivia on CfCA money) but as soon as people started to talk about the IP logging it was quickly hidden.

Although IMC always maintains the story that IP logging is not used in fact the logs are frequently turned on by certain mods to monitor who is posting and commenting. Mod Chris from Sheffield has a current obsession with 'Disinformation' so he often turns it on (he was one of those who posted in the comments section) to have a look at posters details.

Indy will always hide references to IP logging and after a while this post will stop coming up in the View All Posts section to stop people linking directly to it on other sites.

As other posters have said if you want to keep your identity private use a proxy but that's only about 50% effective. If you post to Indy assume the security services, GCHQ, cops etc have your IP.
