Smash Edo picket Barclays

Mnemosyne | 18.03.2010 12:41 | Smash EDO | South Coast

A crowd of protesters stood outside Barclays gates in its main Brighton stronghold yesterday with banners, handing leaflets out and talking to passers by about the corporate bank's associations with arms manufacturers EDO MBM/ITT.

Smash Edo held a picket demonstration outside Barclays bank on North street Brighton (Wednesday 17th) to coincide with the 7th anniversary of the Iraq invasion on the 19th March. A crowd of 25 protesters gathered outside Barclays- holding banners that had “BLOOD MONEY” and “INVESTORS IN DEATH” written on. The demonstrators handed out more than 1500 leaflets informing passersby that Barclays is the UK's largest investor in the arms trade alongside with providing market services to ITT/EDO. Two security mannequins were stationed on the entrance of the bank however there was no visible police presence. Professional witness a London based surveillance company was present in the obligatory white van to record unfolding events. Many people that stopped to chat to the demonstrators expressed an interest in the campaign and more than a few stated they had changed their minds about joining the Global investors of death.

Barclays demo in Bath

18.03.2010 15:47

A demo also took place in Bath.

Just after getting out of court (over a possesion order for their squat, and a charge of obstructing a bailiff), local people met with other BAN activists - including a couple of new faces (shock, horror!) and staged a small protest outside Bath Barclays. The demo was well recieved by passers by, and recieved a little of the direct action treatment when two protestors 'found' a ladder and occupied the roof to stage a banner drop. After negotiating with police, the roof occupiers stayed in place for two hours before avoiding arrest and coming down.

All in all a good day.

We've also got some upcoming eviction fun and games - so now might be a good time to take that well deserved trip to sunny Bath.
