The reason why St. Patrick is seen as having brought Christianity to Ireland has nothing to do with what happened in his own lifetime but much later. Patrick represents the first ROMAN Church figure and eventually the Roman Church displaced the Church of Columba (already present). Also, far from fighting with the Pagans (also still present) Patrick seemed to have gotten along with them well enough to have sat on joint committees of religious leaders (involved wiht updating leagl codes, etc.).
In other words, associating with Patrick "first bringing Christianity to Ireland" is true in the sense that myths represent social truths. He was the first representative of the Church faction that eventually succeeded in taking over the entire religion (for a while).
