Leeds market is STILL selling neo-nazi celtic cross flags.

anti-fash | 05.03.2010 23:45 | Social Struggles | Sheffield

yes, Leeds market is STILL selling neo-nazi celtic cross flags.
The stall has even started displaying the more iconic red celtic cross.

previous post here  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2010/01/444472.html?c=on#c240693

Please complain to Leeds market, this flag should NOT be sold, promoted or flown.

The celtic cross is the symbol used by the KKK as a symbol of racial purity, and still used by neo-nazi groups around the world.

A post from january explains why the symbol is bad, what groups use it, and lists some of the many places the symbol is banned.
see  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2010/01/444472.html?c=on#c240693

so come on please complain to...

Market office
34 George Street
Leeds
LS2 7HY
call: 0113 2145162
at least email:   markets@leeds.gov.uk

or why not hold a demo, spread some leaflets or write to the paper!
until the flag comes down boycott Leeds market!

suggestion?

Take the flags.

Militant

Vsick, eygptian ankh & celtic cross do not belong to them, the crosshair

06.03.2010 08:27

style nazi "celtic croos-ankh" symbol is clearly designed to intimidate.Try google many nazis who use the symbol &put "minorities" including white diabled etc u muppets! in these crosshairs.
So yes these should be removed.

Riot police with baton raised in crosshair is a popular symbol allover the political spectrum, that should be too.
I defend myself+comrades against any type of aggressor, shooting a man with a raised baton even if he is acting like a bastard isnt anarchy though!,
lets not make ourselves look silly or extremist like these nazis, anyone who thinks its funny check out a warzone.
Most of people Ive seen with the crosshair symbol arent usually serious anarchists, usually kids, or those feeding off the scene, mostly:)

What's wrong with it?

I was down at the market buying a flag only last week! Luke is a little embarrassed about my political view but too much of a girl to do anything about it!

Complaint email sent, if there is to be a protest at this stall please let us know.

Please keep us up to date as to whether or not the sale of this shit continues as well. We can't let the Nazis think they can reclaim the streets of Leeds.

"explaining to the stall holder"

06.03.2010 21:18

I tried this after the first post got put up, the stall holder started shouting at me, he got really agressive and I had to leave because I thought he would punch me!
Just thought I should warn you all, as he's not a very nice person.

I didn't think THAT was clear

"Along with the council committee, every single councillor from Leeds City Council has control and input over the market. If they can stop selling fur, they can stop selling nazi goods too. Simple as:"

Might be good but certainly not "clear".

IS that the arrangement? The Leeds City Council controls what stalls may be in this market and what items each can sell? (as opposed to general category of goods). They are allowed to make an arbitrary item by item specification?

If so, you consider that a GOOD thing? (a good power for them to have) Sometimes the cure can be worse than the disease and I would consider this situation one of those times. I would prefer to oppose the STALL rather than for either the council or the Market itself to have that "item by item" power.

Remember folks -- that power (if it exists) doesn't depend upon the badness of the items. That same power would exclude items WE thought good and proper but somebody else didn't.

bye.

Reply from Leeds council

Dear sir/madam

Thank you for email received by the Market service on 6 March 2010 regarding the sale of 'Neo-Nazi flags and other such regalia' at Leeds Market which you found to be offensive/racist.

Whilst I have been able to locate the flag I have been unable to confirm what the other items you refer to 'as other such regalia' may be, therefore in order to assist me in this part of my investigation I should be grateful if you could confirm what these items are and if possible the stall location.

With regard to the sale of the flag after discussing with the Equality team of Leeds City Council, and speaking to the tenant offering the item for sale, the Market service have concluded that the item is not illegal and within the scope of the trader’s permitted use – the tenant concerned stating that the flag is sold as a Celtic flag and not sold to deliberately offend.

However the Market service has advised the tenant that some customers do find the flag offensive and therefore the tenant has been asked to either consider removing the flag from sale or displaying in a less prominent position - please be aware that if the tenant does not heed this advice by refusing to either remove or reposition the flag then, as it is not illegal to sell such items and within the tenant’s permitted use, the Market service cannot take any further action to prevent their sale.

Please note Leeds City Council has a team responsible for recording race/hate complaints, integral to this is the completion of a Hate incident reporting form, therefore for this purpose a form is attached or you to complete and return via email.

If you would prefer a paper copy of the form then please let me have your address or further contact details and I will post this to you, along with a prepaid envelope for you to return the completed form. Please note completion of this form will not instigate a separate investigation of your complaint; the details on the returned form will be used for recording and monitoring purposes only.

Thank you for bringing this matter to the attention of the Market service if you are not satisfied with my response then you have the right to complain under stage 2 of the Leeds City Council complaints procedure.

You can do this by contacting the Customer Relations Officer for City Development; contact details as follows:
