Emergency protest against the EDL in London this Friday

The English Defence League (EDL) will be marching in London on Friday 5 March in support of the far right Dutch MP Geert Wilders who is visiting the House of Lords to whip up hatred against Muslims.

The EDL pretends to be a 'peaceful' group opposed to 'Muslim extremism'. In reality it is nothing of the sort. It is a gang of racist thugs and hooligans with links to the Nazi BNP.

EDL thugs spread fear and terror when they rampaged through Luton and Stoke recently. They smashed cars, attacked shops, chanted "BNP! BNP!" and assaulted Asians. When some locals tried to stop them they were called 'race traitors' and attacked.

The EDL should not be allowed to march through London. Join the Unite Against Fascism protest to show these racists and fascists that they are not welcome here. Meet Friday 5 March at 11am outside the Houses of Parliament.

Is there any talk of a non-UAF/ anarchist/anti-authoritarian bloc being organised for this? It seems a worthwhile demo to attend but I don't fancy being herded like a sheep into some ineffectual action by UAF stewards/ being bombarded with paper sellers and sign-up sheets for SWP.

i dont know...or particularly care about anti-fascist in-fighting. its a free world, we can go down there and protest independently of the uaf if we want to. surely not fighting the edl on our doorstep would be the worst case scenario??

Great that people are protesting against the EDL thug wankers but I think the Islamist fascists are ultimately more dangerous. Will the UAF be siding with the Islamist idiots who think anyone who criticises Islam should be killed?

At the end of the day, who should give a shit about the UAF or whoever,. The EDL are fucking marching....and we are all sitting on this forum talking shit instead of getting on the street and showing them a good fucking off tomorrow! If enough people got there in numbers, including radical muslins and ordinary people and kicked the EDL fuckers off the street, who would give a fuck about whether UAF SWP and the rest of your Searchlight crew organised? Look at Harrow in sept last year.....it wasnt the UAF that was ready to kick shit out of the EDL....but ordianry people outside the UAF.

well said jon in last comment,totally agree,you just end up kettled while the edl thugs roam around causing mayhem,theyve years of practice of this kind of thing at football,just have a closer look and you'll see the much older edl members constantly on their phones directing the mayhem,thats why they pop up where you least expect them whilst your stuck behind uaf kettles,take out the older ones giving orders via phones and watch em disintigrate into not knowing what the hell to do,we need to smash these lot cos they aint going to dissapear,they have re-arranged bolton for march 20th,also talk of demos in oldham and burnley.its going to get very nasty i'm afraid.

Wouldnt suprise me if the police simply try and stick us in the same protest pen, the half hr time difference is all too wierd.

Plus the EDL doesnt meet unitl 1pm outside the tate britain?

Perhaps meeting with the UAF and identifying comrades just before 1 to discuss some ideas might be the best bet.

Also not that anyone plans anything illegal, it might be a good idea to go down there a bit before and learn the streets in the area, particularly where the cameras are, and just as importantly, where the cameras are not.

Interestingly the stop the war coalition has made a call out to support the protest against the EDL, looks like more food for the police pens, i on the other hand will be joining my comrades on the streets.
