Anti-Olympic protests.

Doug | 15.02.2010 08:09 | Repression | Social Struggles | World

"The Olympics have a history of leaving host cities in debt, and relocating the poor and homeless away from the sanitized corridors of host cities."

Thousands turned out in downtown Vancouver to protest the games, something not evident on our UK mainstream media. There were arrests following clashes with riot police. Some activists claimed police brutality after they were hit with batons and wrestled to the ground. Several businesses, including Olympic sponsor HBC were attacked.

what about football

15.02.2010 20:18

what is wrong with the olympics!?
And why pick on vancouver? I'm setting off late season but this is my 5th time to whilster. Its about 2.5 hours from vancouver. Lets put that in perspective... its nearly as far from london to manchester.

Just because you aren't there enjoying it, doesn't mean its bad.
I hate football. But i don't call for a total ban of it. Why not protest about football? Theres a heck of a lot more sponsorship money floating around that sport than there ever is in a once in a 4 year event.
I never heard of a single anarchist have a protest at a football team - ever.
Which makes me think you are just making a silly noise for publicity and bandwagon jumping

If you're interested in finding out why people would protest the Olympic Games no2010.com is a good source of information. These Olympic Games are being held on unsurrendered native land- furthering the colonisation of land belonging to indigenous people. Olympic Games have displaced more than 2 million people in the past fifty years and these winter Olympics are no exception. Homelessness in Vancouver has more than doubled since the city was awarded the event. The security operation cost an estimated $1billion Canadian dollars and has been accompanied by increased repression of poor areas of the city where people have been forced out or forced into shelters to keep them off the streets while the 'eyes of the world' are on the city. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) is not so different from the IMF or the World Bank, it is an organisation to further the interests of the rich and powerful at the expense of the poor. People have long protested summits of the IMF and WB, we should do the same for the Olympic corporate circus

Unsurrendered native lands, who are we talking about? The inuit never really moved that far south and the North american tribes were fairly nomadic, recently (about Custers time) Tribes moved north to escape the lawless North American setlers.

Have all these homeless perople been displaced? or have they come to the area from elsewhere in Canada to cash in on the increase in jobs/wealth that will be in that city? Look at London, most of the homeless are not from london, most arnt even from the UK
