Police watch as violence used against Cargoflora blockaders

boycott agrexco | 07.02.2010 10:00 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | South Coast | World

This morning boycott Israel campaigners blockaded the gates of Cargoflora and Carmel Agrexco in Hayes, Middlesex.

UPDATE - Police are allowing staff at Cargoflora to use force against campaigners blocking their gates in protest against their import of Israeli flowers for Valentine's Day. Two activists who were superglued together had their hands ripped apart and staff were able, while police cleared the area, to wrench the metal gates, which were D-Locked to the necks of the activists open.

Staff tried to cut the D Locks on the second gate then tried to open the gates with people's necks still attached. Supporters resisted but were repelled by the police. All but one activist has now been removed and one is receiving medical attention

The Agrexco blockade is still holding strong...

Im assuming by the tone of this that people are meant to be outraged that the activists were hurt. Well, if someone is stupid enough to lock themselves to a gate via their neck or superglue themselves together thats their problem. I cannot feel sorry people who put themselves in harms way and seem to think that they will not get hurt.

While I agree...

that people should always think about what they're doing and assume that, especially when doing actions like this, blockades, etc. there is a high chance they'll get hurt in some way, I also think that mentioning these things is good. I don't expect any protection from the police or security, etc. but it should be made public that they're standing by while activists are injured where they would jump straight in if the activists were attacking others...

And why shouldn't we be outraged?

Having your business premises targeted for a protest might be more than a bit irritating, but that gives you ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING RIGHT TO ASSAULT PEACEFUL PROTESTORS. If you are selling or importing a contentious product, or one produced in contentious circumstances, you'd better be prepared to be inconvienced by the odd protest. If you don't want to be targeted, try selling something less harmful. Protestors have a right to disrupt your business peacefully. You have a right to remove them (or get the police to remove them) peaceably AND WITHOUT VIOLENCE. Being inconvenienced by anybody does nor give you any right to assault them. If you work on the assumption that it does - why not start a punch up with all those people who get ahead of you in the supermarket queue and hold you up? Or beat up the driver next time your train is late?
I am disgusted that anyone would post something suggesting that protestors were "asking" to be injured. Do us all a favour - keep your callous anti-human sentiments to yourself. Particularly, do me a favour. I'd rather not puke on my keyboard.

Get somebody else?

Look, if not happy about me from over here suggesting that folks need to learn the rules of the "game" then try to recruit somebody else with experience on "tough" picket lines, etc. Like in bitter labor disputes. I'm sure there are folks over your side of the pond with that experience.

Push comes to shove this is just like any of the rougher sports except opposing sides are real rather than token enemies. Whatever you choose to do need to learn if a bang up who (because of the circumstances and not the intent) gets called for the foul, whose the "charge" or whose the "block". Except that it's not a penalty card or sitting on the sidelines but courts and maybe jail. I'm not saying do or don't do anything. I'm saying learn the rules. Because this is likely to get very nasty. If the other guy knows the rules and you don't then you are "playing" at a severe disadvantage.

Do you understand what I am saying? If on a picket line and a scab is trying to come through and if I am certain that because of the exact circumstances if we bang he's going to get called for the foul then I am certainly going to hit as hard as I can and cause as much bodily damage/hurt as I can. Now I possibly MAY do that even if I know the "foul" gets called on me (if I get caught). See the difference? Why it's important to KNOW the rules.

Problem is

In response to the above comment. I'm sure most blockaders have been in this situation before (especially at Agrexco, they have been violent for years) and can hold their own. Problem is...once the police is there their tactic tend to be to arrest protestors for more serious things than the charge the blockade itself might trigger. Even if any action is in self defence. Even resisting the police dragging you off when you are trying to protect someone has more than once resulted in beyond belief 'assault of police' charges. Hence, all that can safely be done is to do what has to be done to ensure the safety of the lock on people.

More right-wing, off-topic gash from MDN.

Simply ignore, don't even bother responding to them.
