Antonella Antonecchia | 02.02.2010 01:34 | Social Struggles

Think slavery is dead? Think again. Human atrocities, human trafficking, inhumane working conditions are as real today as they ever were. Times must change. The 4th Annual Human Rights Walkathon, dedicated to bringing home the message of human rights to Tampa Bay is gearing up for their biggest walkathon ever — and with it their message of equality for all.

Human rights abuse in Nigeria, China, Pakistan, Haiti, South Korea, Vietnam… these are all current headlines today. Think all is well in America? According to US Department of Justice over 800,000 victims are trafficked across international borders worldwide each year. And Florida is commonly known amongst law enforcement personnel to have one of the highest incidences of human trafficking in the country. The Human Rights Walkathon, dedicated to educating Tampa Bay about Human Rights, is teaming up with Youth for Human Rights Florida, Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking and Tampa Bay Academy of Hope to spread their message of equality for all.

The Walkathon will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 in N. Straub Park, St. Petersburg, FL beginning at 9am. It is a FREE family event, committed to raising awareness about basic human rights for all mankind. The Walkathon expects over 1000 walkers this year with live entertainment by David Pomeranz, one of the most successful and prolific songwriters and recording artists on the in the music scene today, and MC Lite.

“Human rights are the rights you have simply because you are human.”

About the Human Rights Walkathon:
The Human Rights Walkathon is produced by the Human Rights Group, Inc., a private non-profit corporation composed of volunteer staff. The purpose of the Human Rights Walkathon is to celebrate, promote and forward the rights that were set forth and proclaimed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948. Their goal is to help unite all people in agreeing to human rights and to make these rights a reality in the world today and believe that it is through education that war, discrimination and intolerance can be eliminated. More schools, human-rights groups and non-governmental organizations are represented at the Human Rights Walkathon every year.
