Cambridge Anarchists look back on 2009

Anarchy isn’t all about sitting in the pub talking bollox… sometimes anarchists do stuff as well. Here’s a few highlights of 2009:
18 April- Antifascists go head to head with the BNP- A small group of local antifascists brought the local BNPs day to a very early end. The heavily outnumbered antifascists confiscated £60 the South Cambridgeshire BNPs vile bullshit in St Neots as the naughty Nazis attempted to hold a stall and leaflet around the town. After stern words were had later on, the woeful local BNP failed to show at their next play date the following week, outside Bar Hills Tesco Extra. Raymond Brown the Cambridge Evening News journo scum calls the anti-fascists “THUGS” in his wildly innacurate report.
May Day!- Anarchists organised an intervention at Cambridges May Day march, to pay respects to those that have lost their lives in the class clash. The breakaway march saw 30-40 individuals leave the tedious ‘official’ stroll about town to form a contingent that moved towards the Parkside cop-shop where a G20 arrestee and the grand-daughter of a man killed at Hillsborough spoke. There was then 2 minutes of silence.
15 July- Social Centre- Anarchists and other radicals where involved in opening up the short-lived social centre, in the old Gala Bingo Hall. Unfortunately this experiment in creating a freespace for community use was shut down after a week. The eviction was to make way for more luxury flats for yuppie bastards. However, work on these new ‘flats’ has yet to start.
30 September- Unemployed Workers Union founded- Local anarchists and other working-class militants have been active in the creation of the UWU- a union designed to fight for decent jobs, apprenticeships and improved welfare benefits, while also providing a structure to counter attacks on unemployed workers. The launch of the initiative saw a well attended meeting jam-packed with enthusiasm!
1 November- Party on the Postie picket line- A group of anarchists and other assorted individuals from around Cambridgeshire descended upon the picket line down the Postal Sorting-Office, to show solidarity with the striking workers. Food, drink and moral support were brought in abundance, as the scabs, breaking the picket line, were heckled over tunes blasted out by a bike powered sound system taken down to the line by the anarchists in attendance! Money was also raised to support the struggle.
Plus Cambs anarchos were involved in Climate Camp, going down to support the Vestas factory occupation, getting involved in the Anarchist Movement Conference, trying our best to support the Irish Traveller residents of Smithy Fen threatened by the Council, starting a Green Technology group in Cambridge and going to Greece to meet up with the anarchist movement there. See you on the streets in 2010!!

An inspiration to us all. Now lets get involved in our communities and promote mutual aid networks and ferment the flames of insurrection!
