Re: the 'Chagos Islands Marine Reserve Petition' currently circulating UK alternative net communities and message boards.
Be warned everybody,
It’s starting to look very like Care2 – the ‘petition campaign group’ that has launched a Chagos Islands marine reserve petition are in fact Obamaton pod people. They are based in California (where else?) and promote their petitions in a remarkably similar manner to the thoroughly discredited MoveOn.org, the underhand Democrat recruiting organisation that hijacked the anti-Iraq war movement, and then dumped it once it was no longer useful.
There’s a facility for people who sign this petition to write their own comments, but a lot less than one in ten of these even mention the islanders, who were evicted at gunpoint by the UK to make way for a US airbase/secret prison.
The comments by and large betray a remarkably retro resurgence of middle class hippie-shit where people don’t count, only ‘nature’ (in a word, eco-fascism). Below is a typical comment...
“The establishment of reserves is one of the few remaining options for conservation of fish and other marine species in the face of the global propensity for overfishing. These plans for the Chagos archipelago would give Britain a globally important conservation role and voice in environmental politics. A well-managed tourism initiative would, in conjunction with policing by vessels based at Diego Garcia, enable the reserve to be managed at relatively low cost, while the benefits would be inestimable.”
What about the islanders in poverty and exile? Oh never mind them: it’ll ‘give Britain a globally important role and voice in environmental politics’, funded by a ‘well managed tourism initiative’, and most sinister of all, ‘policed by vessels based at Diego Garcia’. But it’ll all be ‘managed at low cost’ and the benefits will be ‘inestimable’ - though presumably not for the sub-humans, only for their rightful colonial masters - oh yes and of course... as an after-thought, those cute little fishes.
So if you do sign, be aware of who Care2 probably are, and take advantage of the comment section to state that you only support this petition if the wording is expressly changed so that bringing the islanders home and fully re-empowering them as caretakers is all part of the marine reserve plan. If enough such comments are added, it may have an effect.
It might also be an idea to add a a sentence about Diego Garcia’s current role as a base for aerial bombardment, illegal incarceration and torture by the US.
