Fuck giving money to corporate toothless Shelter. How about giving some money to Advisory Service for Squatters?

Shelter Shat on its Workers

15.01.2010 22:04

Two years ago, Shelter ripped up its employees employment contracts so it could force a pay cut on them.
Shelter had just bid for a new legal aid contract to get government money to give an advice service to homeless people, but decided that the only way it could make a profit from the contract was by cutting its workers pay and conditions. When they couldn't get the workers to agree to the cuts after three months talking with ACAS, they told the workers to accept the cuts regardless or they would be sacked.
In that same year Shelter gave its directors pay rises and spent £500,000 on redecorating its London office.
I know about this because I applied for a job with Shelter at the time, not knowing there was an industrial dispute going on and I would, in effect, be expected to scab. I read about the dispute in the Big Issue, about the only place it was publicised apart from in The Socialist Worker, just before I formally accepted the job offer. I told Shelter I wouldn't cross picket lines, so they could either pay me to stay off work when there was a picket at the Manchester office, or I would be joining the strike (in other words, Eff off Shelter management).
As Ken Loach asked people to do at the time, I will never give money to Shelter or help them raise funds ever again.
