A large delegation of “Vicentini” will fly to Oslo on Monday, Dec 7th 2009. The goal is to protest against Pres. Barack Obama, who will be receiving the Peace Nobel Prize for his war policy, materialized in Vicenza with the construction of a new and devastating military base.

Vicenza is a core location for U.S. military strategies. The construction site of the new war installation started in these months to host the 173° Airborne Brigade, which has a leading role in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The city of Vicenza – inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites for the invaluable architectural heritage left by Andrea Palladio – hosts also Africom, the U.S headquarter for the military operations in the African continent.

All this is done against the will of the local Community – who already expressed in vast majority against the U.S. military presence - and without any possibility for the citizens to get information about health and security risks.

The U.S. military presence is an occupation that the “Vicentini” refuse. The man who will receive the PEACE Nobel Prize refuses to respect democracy in a European city and imposes this new military project on Vicenza. With this decision Pres. Obama loads a further magazine in his war machine-gun.

No Dal Molin

I have been to Vicenza a few time now and once attended a No Dal Molin festival day, it was heartening to see that many thousands of local people had turned out. To say that this army base is against the will of the local people is no overstatement, there were people of all background and ages involved. No Dal Molin stickers adorn many lamp posts throughout Vicenza, and I heard that there are land occupations and direct action against the building of the base, all supported by the vast majority of residents.

As I tune the radio in Vicenza, I come across the radio station 'The Eagle', aimed solely at American servicemen but broadcasted throughout Vicenza. It is a rare insight into the insidious jingoistic propaganda the troops are exposed to, and also an intrusive reminder of the unwanted military base.

Remembering the success of the Smash EDO carnivals against the arms trade in Brighton, it intrigues me to think how successful (and disruptive ;) a similar national mobilsation could be in Vicenza. It might just make the government apparatchiks who endorse this military base think twice.
