From CHINA- The United Nations Development Program praised China's plans to cut carbon emissions intensity by 40% by the year 2020, and their development of wind energy technology. Australia anti-whaling activists launched a new boat to combat Japanese whalers in Antarctic waters.
From NETHERLANDS- Radio Netherlands has eliminated shortwave broadcasts to North America. The decision is based on their surveys that find very few listeners in N America. Following President Obama's announcement of an Afghan troop surge, NATO members reacted to the call for their increased participation. Then a report from Afghanistan on the reaction there to news of the increased troop levels. In the Netherlands demonstrators took to the streets in opposition to proposed anti-squatting laws.
From CUBA- President Obama refused to sign a land mine ban that was agreed to by 158 other countries. Iraqi officials are reporting increased cases of cancer and birth defects since the US invasion in 2003. Nobel Peace prize winner Mohamed EL Baradei quoted the prayer of St Francis as he stepped down from his post as chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The countries in the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas condemned the Presidential election in Honduras. A Venezuelan journalist says that Colombia has plans to attack his nation.
From RUSSIA- Time magazine called the first decade of this new century as the worst in world history. BRIC, that is Brazil, Russia, India, and China, have threatened to boycott the Climate Summit in Copenhagen if their demands are ignored. There was a parade of 14 hydrogen powered cars in the run up to the Climate Summit in Copenhagen, none of them from US manufacturers. An observation on the British Iraq Inquiry, raising the question "Will the US have a similar public disclosure?"
