Evening Post censors antifascists

Using the NEP as bog roll | 03.12.2009 20:49 | Social Struggles

The Nottingham Evening Post is notorious for the fascist drivel it allows to be posted as comments to its website. However, on a thread that antifascists were promoting their view, it recently disabled comments. This is just part of it's insidious role in trying to quell growing enthusiasm for antifascism in Nottingham.

The Evening Post has been heavily covering the police's statements on Saturday's EDL protests which take all of the EDL's claims about not being racist at face value. It is promoting the police and city council's line that we should all just stay at home and hope the nasty fascists go away.

This is what we would expect for a newspaper owned by the right wing Daily Mail group which is, like other local papers, heavily dependent on the police's cooperation for stories. However, the NEP seems to be more craven than most in becoming a mouthpiece for the local police.

Just as well site like Indymedia exist!

A bit unfair

On one hand, you criticise the NEP for allowing all sorts of fascist drivel on their website. On the other, you criticise them for disabling comments that also contained lots of fascist drivel. (Yes, it also contained some people trying to counter that. But from my reading of the comments, they weren't winning.)
I struggle to imagine a scenario in which they'd please you.

Pete
