No to Deportations and Destitution demonstration

South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group | 20.11.2009 16:35 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Sheffield

When the UK steps up its attacks on asylum seekers, South Yorkshire says No. Join our demonstration in Sheffield on Saturday 28th at 11am outside Sheffield Town Hall.

In a pre-election "get tough on asylum" move the Labour Govrnment has:
Deported people to Baghdad claiiming it is "safe"
Cut asylum benefits by £7 per week to £35 per week
Threatened to deport people to Zimbabwe
Forced people to travel in person the length of the UK to make an asylum claim

It's time for South Yorkshire people to show solidarity with those seeking asylum from war, persecution and torture.

Organised by the South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Group (SYMAAG), supported by the Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers and many refugee community organisations

Wasting tax payers money

Why should my taxes be used to support spongers? They're supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country they come to, and there are many safe countries between Great Britain and Iraq/Zimbabwe.

Or do you accept that they are simply economic migrants looking for a better income, in which case why should the tax payer fund and support that lifestyle? Migrants should be kept locked up until their claim for citizenship is processed, those who are refused should be deported immediately.

It's high time we said no to economic spongers, and forced them to apply for citizenship like any other normal individual would... i.e. in their country of origin at the embassy!

Thank goodness the vast majority of people in this country have common sense and will be voting in the next general election for the Conservatives or Labour. The sooner you silly wanabe socialists are kept locked out of power the better.

Asylum seekers are NOT ALLOWED by the Labour/Tory government to work in the uk, forcing them to live on substandard benefits.

So the many doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals cannot contrubute to society.

re your 'economic migrant' argument, If YOU wanted to go to the USA, Australia, Europe or anywhere else for work or for whatever reason, I would say you have a perfect right to do so, though most asylum seekers are fleeing war zones and repression by their own governments, often leaving behind families and friends. So please have some compassion.
