Trident Ploughshares Press Release
20 November 2009 - For immediate release
Anti-nuclear activists held a banner which read "Disarm the Seas" on the Rhu Spit as the first nuclear-powered Astute Class submarine sailed through the Rhu narrows on the west coast of Scotland at 10:45am this morning (20 November, 2009). Rainbow peace flags and a colourful CND banner fluttered in a brisk wind to greet the crew of HMS Astute, who stood at attention on the deck of the brand new hunter-killer submarine as it sailed into Faslane Naval Base for the first time. The demonstration was organized by Helensburgh CND and Trident Ploughshares.

So if we abolish our nuclear deterrent one presumes you'll volunteer to join the army? Without a sure fire deterrent, this country has little in the way of protection.
People's minds are short and their vision clouded, the world has only been at relative peace for a few short years. History tells us that humans are rife with warfare, and that it will happen in the future at some point. Better to be prepared than unprepared, don't want to get caught with your pants down.
Build more nukes!

The argumant that nuclear weapons keep the peace, if followed to its natural conclusion, means that every country in the world should have them for 'protection', a fatuous argument.
Would you also argue that everybody should carry a knife 'for protection' as many young people do?. If so you should go and argue the point with your local constabulary who will tell you what a dangerous mind-set you have.

Nukes aren't designed as deterrants against terrorists that is not their intention. Terrorists hide amongst the civillian population, thus one is forced to use smaller arms and tactics to root them out. Why blather on about terrorism, the vast majority of conflicts have nothing to do with terrorism they are wars between states. You seem to think that peace in Europe will hold and that all countries are now best buddies?
Nukes are what kept the Russians out of West Germany, Nukes are what keeps North Korea out of the South, Nukes are what stop all out war between Pakistan and India, Nukes are what stops surrounding Islamic nations from invading Israel.
A state will be reluctant to send it's troops against a country that is armed with nuclear weapons. If you were incharge of a country would you risk losing 6 million workers in the blink of an eye? Of course not.
Thankfully the vast majority of people in this country are sane and support having a nuclear deterrant.
Build more Nukes!
Deterrents???

There is enough deterrents to destroy this planet few hundred times over and yet you are still asking for more!
But just think about it all of you 'SANE' people.
After you 'release' first maybe 20 (max), is there going to be anything left to 'destroy'???
Just asking.
