Sussex Uni boycott of Israel receives international support

Josh Jones | 13.11.2009 10:27 | University Occupations for Gaza | Education | Palestine | Social Struggles | South Coast

Students at the University of Sussex have received messages of support from Palestinian grassroots organisations and Israeli and Jewish academics, following a decision by ballot to boycott Israeli goods.

The decision has received support from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee, the grassroots Palestinian committee formed out of the campaign to boycott Israel in 2007. Speaking on behalf of its 23 member organisations, a spokesperson said that Sussex’s decision was significant as part of the international movement:

‘The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) salutes Sussex University students for their decision to boycott Israeli goods.

‘Student movements played a key role in ending Apartheid in South Africa. Today, we call on students across the globe to boycott Israeli products and divest from Israel until it complies with fundamental human rights principles and international law.’

Meanwhile, Jewish and Israeli academics critical of the occupation of Palestine have shown their support. The scholar Norman G. Finkelstein commented, 'It is heartening that Sussex students are actively engaged in ending the inhuman and illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.'

reflection time

If a guy like Norman Finkelstein told me I'd done the right thing, I'd go have a hard look in the mirror to figure out what I'd done that was wrong.

When you actual ask Palestinian trade unionists, instead of simply declaring that white Europeans know what's best for them, you'll discover that they're largely opposed to BDS, because they know that it's their jobs and income that will disappear first.

There's nothing to discuss. If any comments are posted that fail to reflect the Indymedia UK approved line of antisemitic mumbo jumbo then they are hidden.

Indymedia is only to be used for promoting the well rehearsed line of,

"It's not the Jews it's the Zionists we hate"

"I don't doubt the Holocaust .... but"

"The Palestinians are a lovely people who would never hurt a fly"

"Everyone knows the Mossad is behind all the terrorism in the world"

The Jews, the Jews they're everywhere

Who is and who isn't, that is the question!

hi discus, the problem that I find is that people are quite ignorant of the issues, so info nights, films and discussions are good for informing people of whats actually happening there. So well done to the SU. The other thing I find is the dis-info from the israeli goverment has been that effective that people get very nervous about the subject for fear of upsetting certain people. Now that Shlomo Sands has written his book and had it translated I would think discussions are gonna be raging for while now. All the best

compare and contrast

An academic boycott of Israel in Norway was averted on Thursday, when the executive board of the University of Trondheim unanimously decided to reject the controversial move.

"The vote resulted in total victory," said Professor Bjorn Alsberg, a member of the board of the Trondheim-based Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Alsberg, a chemistry professor, led a campaigned at the Norwegian city against the boycott.

He said that the vote to boycott Israel - which drew condemnations from Jewish organizations in Israel and elsewhere - was rejected after none of the 11 board members objected when NTNU Dean Torbjorn Digernes suggested scrapping the motion from the board meeting's agenda.

FTP likes it that way. That's why he's hiding so many posts in this thread. You can't be trusted to think for yourself on this one, apparently.

no wonder

lets have more controversy

13.11.2009 19:04

Yeah but isn't a boycott controversial? I want to hear both sides of the argument with respect. Why won't people get involved in controversies anymore, disagreements are good for the democracy arent they?

nothing happening here

14.11.2009 12:41

But discussions aren't raging - why don't these people ever post? I've certainly never seen any "disinfo from the isreali government" here. Why don't they post their opinions then?
