In the Castle Grounds, just on the right as you go in, is an obelisk to commemorate British soldiers killed in an abortive attack on Afghanistan in the 1870s.

It is worth a look: first because it emphasises the long history of failed attempts to occupy Afghanistan; second, because of the large numbers listed as dieing later from their wounds or disease.

On Saturday we gathered in the Market Square at 2pm and made our way up to the Castle with the banner and placards. After a short negotiation at the gate, we got in to lay our wreath: In Memory of the Afghani Dead. We only know there are many tens of thousands.

With the death toll rising in Afghanistan, in what looks more and more like a hopeless (as well as unjust) war, it is important to speak out against it.
