REEL NEWS BENEFIT:Day of the Dead Samhain Celebration

Steve Gwynne | 16.10.2009 20:58 | Birmingham

Reel News make short documentary films on current events cutting through the bullshit and reporting on issues otherwise ignored by the mainstream media.

Reel News benefit night at the Wagon and Horses (Adderley Street, Digbeth) on the 31st October. Reel News is an activist video collective, set up to publicise and share information on inspirational campaigns and struggles - not just in this country, but across the world.  http://www.reelnews.co.uk/index.htm.

They will be showing at least four films, one of which is the campaign to keep open the Vestas Turbine Plant on the Isle of Wight. Vestas have closed the UK's only wind turbine blade factories, on the Isle of Wight. Workers occupied the factory and are still picketing.  http://savevestas.wordpress.com/ Other films include 'Countdown to Copenhagen', In December 2009, world leaders will meet in Denmark to forge a new climate accord that replaces the Kyoto Protocol. www.countdowntocopenhagen.org/ticker.html, a film about the Tower Hamlets Strike to stop job cuts to their ESOL dept,  http://london.indymedia.org/ and also a film about the plans to to use Plymouth Dock to store nuclear waste.

The theme of the night is going to be Samhain with a good hint of the Dia de los Muertos (Festival of the Dead) courtesy of Mexican culture so don't miss the "Death Grotto".

Traditional Samhain meets Tex-Mex vegan food will be on offer, with an emphasis on seasonal and local veg.

Overall, the night is being set up as a benefit gig to raise funds to enable Reel News to carry on their good work. Therefore, the event will not only be showing political documentaries but will also be hosting bands, musicians and local DJs.
Also there will be poetry from Grassy Noel -disturbingly-delivered political satire - you're gonna wonder who spiked your drink...and more to be confirmed ...
