Anti anti Semitism with Norman Finkelstein

Palestine Monitor/Kieron Monks | 12.10.2009 15:51 | Palestine | World

What links ex-president Jimmy Carter, Baroness Jenny Tongue and the University of California? All these have been recently been accused of anti-Semitism, vilified in the press for questioning Israel’s occupation of Palestine. It is a reflex action of pro-Israel groups to publish slander against vocal critics, and few have been more systematically targeted than political scientist Norman Finkelstein.

Following the Goldstone report there is pressure on Israel to explain its conduct. As more facts emerge from the Gaza massacre, made available throughout the world by digital media, it becomes harder for apologists to defend Israeli policy.

"Israels occupation of Palestine" is confusing terminology. Israel is a currently existing state in part of the territory that was referred to as Palestine under British occupation and as the Holy Land during the Crusades. It is occupying the West Bank and besieging Gaza. It had displaced the Palestinian refugees and refuses their right to return. "Israel's Apartheid system" or "Israel's war crimes" would be clearer terms.

Is Zionism fascism? Is it a counter-revolutionary movement born out of the petit-bourgeois which aims to crush the left through street violence by mobilising the lumpen and backwards layers of the working-class? No?

Then it ain't fascism.

Sick, wrong, imperialist, colonialist, apartheid-esque, reactionary. All these terms are fine. By calling everything and everyone a fascist, however, we weaken our understanding of it and can cause the anti-fascist and workers movements to adopt really stupid and unhelpful ideas. Should we beat the shit out of JSoc students for being Zionists now? Of course not.

Norman G Finkelstein's work is superb! His 'Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict' really helped to clear away a lot of the crap and distortions that surround the conflict. It's good scholarly stuff! 'The Holocaust Industry' is worth a look too :)

"Huh", "Dirt Trot" - this is Indymedia. Critical comments are not encouraged. Please take your "reason" and "facts" and go away, or you will be banned as a disruptive user. Or at the very least called a lot of nasty names.

Remember - everyone who disagrees with you is a fascist, everyone who disagrees with you is a fascist, everyone who disagrees with you is a fascist.
