The Lambeth Branch of UNISON - the second largest trade union in the UK - has voted to reaffirm its solidarity with Palestinians living under Israeli Military Occupation at its Branch Committee meeting on 17th September 2009 and support the Viva Palestina convoy taking place in December.

The Branch Committee voted to twin with the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions to strengthen the work the branch has been doing for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign and to continue to raise the issue of Palestine within the trade union movement.

Lambeth UNISON also pledged to support the next Viva Palestina convoy, which aims to enter Gaza on the 27th of December 2009 to mark the beginning of the Israeli massacre of the Palestinian people in 2008. The convoy aims to focus the worlds’ attention on the atrocities that took place and the ongoing poverty and brutal conditions which millions of Palestinians are forced to live in. The Branch has agreed to raise funds for the convoy and ensure that a Lambeth UNISON banner travels to Gaza.

Lambeth Branch has consistently supported the Palestinian people over recent years. In January, Lambeth UNISON has raised over £2000 for Medical Aid for Palestinians through a fundraising drive throughout the Borough’s workplaces.

International Officer, Gurmeet Khurana, stated, “The Israel Military Occupation is ongoing along with the ethnic cleansing, arbitrary deaths and unlawful imprisonment of thousands of innocent Palestinians. We will continue to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign in Brixton, Lambeth and internationally until there is peace and justice for all in historic Palestine.”

Lambeth UNISON Shop Steward, Sahida Uddin, who travelled on the last UK convoy to Gaza in March 2009, added, “It is fantastic that Lambeth UNISON has committed itself to support the next Viva Palestina convoy. It not only makes a real difference to the lives of so many Gazans, but it raises awareness of the Apartheid conditions imposed by the Israeli state and is a step closer to ending this injustice”
