The Independent Asylum Commission was established in 2006 to conduct a nationwide review of the UK's asylum system on behalf of citizens. Established by and accountable to the CITIZEN Organising Foundation, the umbrella body for Obama-style broad-based community organising in the UK, the twelve Commissioners gathered testimony from people seeking sanctuary, experts in the field, three former Home Secretaries and the general public before producing 180 recommendations for reform in 2008. This seminar will explore how the Independent Asylum Commission approached political change in a sensitive policy area, and how the CITIZENS for Sanctuary campaign is using community organising techniques to make sure that the Commission’s recommendations become a reality.
