Stop the ID Card Con - Don't be a Guinea Pig
James Elsdon-Baker | 25.09.2009 06:19 | Social Struggles
Why pick on Manchester and the North West? The government thought it could force people working at Manchester Airport to be guinea-pigs for the national ID card. It was wrong. The airlines and unions saw no benefits and said 'NO'. The government backed down. It is now spending your tax money trying to get people in the region to 'volunteer' instead.
At the launch of a new campaign against the rollout of ID cards in the
North-West, NO2ID groups from around the country will be visiting Greater
Manchester on Saturday 10th October. The groups will set up street stalls in
town and district centres, and tell people "Don't be a guinea pig, stop the
ID con!"
We are looking to hold public information stalls in Bury, Chorlton,
Fallowfield, Oldham, Salford, Stockport and Wythenshawe among others. Groups
from as far away as Edinburgh and Norwich will be helping to spread the word.
If you'd like to come along and help out at one of our stalls, or have a
suggestion for where we could hold another, please contact us on
manchester@no2id.net to tell us where you'd like to be. The Government is
launching a new push for the discredited, expensive and intrusive National
Identity Scheme. They cannot be allowed to spread their misinformation
unchallenged.
Saturday, 17th October 2009
NO2ID will be running street stalls across central Manchester in the morning, with a drop-in workshop for new campaigners from 1pm at the Friends Meeting House in Mount Street.
This will be followed by a public meeting: 'Stop the ID Card Con'
Time: 3:30 - 5:00pm
Location: Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester M2 5NS (map)
(Beers and giant ID card burning afterwards)
October 2009 will be one of the most important months in NO2ID's history. Be
part of it.
