The atmosphere in Calais last night
24.09.2009 11:19
The battle of attrition against migrants in Calais continued last night, with many bored CRS thugs driving about looking for people to harass.
Many migrants were roaming about, with those Pashtuns who have been released from detention having nowere to go following the destruction of their homes. It didn't help that many had had belongings or cash confiscated from them. Some were migrants wanting to leave in anticpation of destruction of their squats, but could find no safe space to spend the night.
People were trying to keep their heads down, and be even more invisible than they are already forced to be.
We spent the night trying to help various groups of such people.
As it happened, no other squats were destroyed, but migrants were arrested usual and CRS sadistically pulled over now and again at squats to give people a scare.
As mentioned above, the Kurds now living under the bridge were arrested last night, and various groups cops showed up at the Eritreans'. They were counting heads, and shining torches through the windows.
At 2am plainclothes police/fascists went into the Eritrean house, acting very aggressively and trying to intimidate, kicking their things and making threatening gestures.
Many of us spent the morning at the dockside squat (Palestinian/Egyptian/Sudanese/Eritrean), as the police had visited them to warn them that their homes would be next to go. As of yet, the shelters are still standing and no arrests have been made, although the police did come by to count heads.

The first raft of border controls were brought in in Britain to keep out the Jews at the start of the war. Years later we pretend that we welcomed them with open arms. We MUST wake up and learn from past indoctrinations because by standing by and watching, we become complicit in the persecution and deaths of these migrants.
