Greece: Migrant uprising at the detention centre of Pagani, Mytilene

atgr | 22.09.2009 16:29 | Migration

The “detention centre” (read: prison) in Pagani, Mytilene, is where most of the undocumented migrants are locked up upon their arrival at the island of Mytilene, in NE Greece. Shutting down the camp was one of the main demands of the NoBorders camp that took place in Mytilene in August.

A few hours ago (at around 4pm local time), migrant detainees in the camp started an uprising, setting fires in the courtyard and starting to demolish the centre’s exterior fence.

People in solidarity have already arrived at the scene. So have local media, as well as units of the special police force (OPKE).

Photos and more info, here.

Updates will follow.

Thanks for posting this. Some people are only just waking up to what migrants have been suffering in Calais. Greek immigration prisons are inhumane and appalling, even compared to the Calais 'jungles'. This is where many of the Calais migrants will end up before being illegally deported without any recourse to asylum claims.
