Camden council housing sell off scandal / lab update from Labour Party Camden

There are plans to build a deadly virus containment facility and animal testing lab on a Camden Council house estate, Somers Town in place of urgently needed council homes and community facilities. This morning we received a letter from Camden Labour Party revealing plans by Camden council to sell off yet more homes through "downsizing week". This is an utter travesty and must be stopped.

"Housing Sell Off Scandal" - community update for residents.

What is the Lib Dem / Tory council doing?

* The Lib Dems and tories are auctioning hundreds of council homes to private developers. This is in spite of the fact that Camden now has 18,000 people on it's housing waiting list.

* In another money spinning sell exercise the council proposed to rent out empty council properties at market rates.

* Now they're trying to shift tenants out of secure tenanices and into private sector through "downsizing week".

Statement from Frank Dobson MP
" As the Labour leader of Camden council more than thirty years ago I was responsible for the council buying thousnads of homes to help ordinary peopel get a roof over their head. There fore I take it rather personally when I see these omes being sold off to private developers by the current Lib Dem / Tory administartion.

There is no justification for the council to sell off homes when Camden has 18,000 people on it's housing waiting list. these are people who are indesperate need of somewhere to live. I urge the Lib Dems and Tories to immediately halt the sell off of council properties for the sake of all those who need a home."

Camden Labour says :

* Property prices are falling, so the council won't even get a good deal let alone be able to house the thousnads of people on it's waiting list. One developer who recently 'flipped' council flats [buying them at auction and putting them immediately back on the market] stands to make almost £200,000 overnight!

* With over 18,000 people on Camden's housing waiting list the council should be looking to expand the number of himes available. Not sell them off. Labour is campaigning to save Camden's homes.

* "Downsizing week" is simply a ruse by the council designed to ove tenants from secure tenancies into the private sectoe and free up more properties for the councilt o sellt o private developers.

While we agree with what they [Camden Labour] are saying here we are asking that they contact Gordon Brown and ask him to halt the process of the Camden Animal / Bio Hazard Lab and build homes on the Brill Palce site earmarked for the lab instead. With the rapid sell off of council homes we are wondering just how realistic is the fight to save the site from the lab on the basis of fighting for council homes?
