Exposing the Health Impacts of Open Cast: Public Meeting in Douglas

Mainshill Solidarity Camp | 15.09.2009 08:39 | Climate Chaos | Health | Social Struggles | South Coast

Wednesday 23rd September, 19:00, St. Brides Centre, Douglas, South Lanarkshire

with Dr. Dick Van Steenis & unveiling the results of the Coal Health Study

Since the Camp for Climate Action in Mainshill Wood, community activists have been working hard to expose the real and devastating health impacts to local communities of open cast coal mining. Since a vastly inadequate amount of research has been done into these impacts, the campaign has done it itself.

The Coal Health Study produced at the camp has been expanded into an impressive and damning document, and will be released shortly before the public meeting. In addition, Dr. Dick Van Steenis will be coming to Douglas to deliver a lecture on his findings on open casting and health through years of research.

This public meeting is set to shatter any illusions that there is no link between increased incidences of cancers and respiratory diseases in the Douglas Valley (and other heavily mined areas) and open cast mining. Scottish Coal, South Lanarkshire Council and Lord Home have consistently stated that there are no adverse health impacts from open cast coal mining – what they meant was that there was no apparent evidence for it.

The campaign against a new mine at Mainshill has all the evidence needed to show what two decades of open cast coal mining does to community health. Please come to the Public Meeting on the 23rd September to find out more and support the campaign.
