I declare a 14 day national holiday!

Danny | 05.09.2009 16:13 | Health | Workers' Movements

Everyone expects a huge surge in swine flu, with employers expecting a 50% abscence rate over the Autumn. It is a genuine threat and people will die. You may as well make the most of it, protect yourself and stay at home.

Employers have failed in their attempt to force people with swine flu to return to work before they are fit. This shows the true nature of the employer/employee relationship in the UK - the employers distrusting their own workers wish to work to the extent that they are prepared to risk their health, and the health of their co-workers and families by penalising anyone who falls sick and fails to attend.

You work hard all year for your employers and yet they have shown their contempt for your work-ethic and contempt for your health. Going in to work when you don't need to simply risks your own health and the health of your friends and family.

So, fuck your uncaring boss, and repay their cynicism and self-interest without risk to yourself. Self-diagnose yourself with flu as you are legally allowed to do, and sign yourself off for a fortnight. You might not be infected with this deadly virus, but you are far safer spending a fortnight in your house than mixing with workers and commuters at least some of whom will be highly infectious. Worst case is you genuinely get swine flu after your holiday, and in that case you can get a real diagnosis from the doctor that will get you another two weeks without any possible repercussions. Different flu, different sick note.

Now is the Autumn of our Gardening-Leave! Far better than a 'summer of rage', and far more costly to your exploiters too. It is times like this I wish I had a job. Please reword and repost this call to inaction so no worker misses out.
