ORGANIZATION:
Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. We are a chapter-based network of young people and activists in more than 100 countries around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. Our role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice. SFT’s global network is led and coordinated by SFT Headquarters (SFT HQ) located in New York City.

SFT USA is a chapter-based network of students, young people, and activists across the United States. It is the largest and longest-running of SFT’s national networks. In order to best support the growth and development of SFT USA, we are looking to hire a full-time SFT USA Grassroots Director.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The USA Grassroots Director will be responsible for overseeing the development and coordination of SFT USA’s network of chapters and student members, with a particular emphasis on communication, administration, campaign implementation, and capacity building. This position requires substantial travel within the USA.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Communicating with, inspiring and supporting SFT USA’s regional coordinators and network of existing chapters and members;
• Educating and outreaching to prospective chapters and student members;
• Mobilizing and coordinating SFT USA’s active involvement in international & national campaigns;
• Managing SFT's US-based chapter and student membership information;
• Overseeing the production & dissemination of materials and resources for SFT USA;
• Overseeing the leadership development and continuity of SFT USA’s regional coordinators & chapter leaders;
• Managing SFT USA’s operating budget and working with SFT HQ staff to fundraise and make SFT USA financially sustainable; and
• Other tasks as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• A minimum of 2 years' involvement in and exhibited commitment to the Tibetan freedom movement;
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus related work experience;
• A minimum of 2 years of youth organizing experience;
• Experience coordinating events, conferences, training and/or speaking tours;
• Experience in coordinating and implementing issue-based campaigns; and
• Experience working with young people and people from diverse cultures.

SKILLS:
• Strong organizational skills and knowledge of grassroots capacity building;
• Ability to supervise people and work well in a team;
• Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and written communication skills in English;
• Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, email, and word processing. Graphic design and web design skills would be an asset; and
• Fluency in Tibetan language in addition to English would be an asset.

STATUS: Full-time position. This position is based in SFT HQ’s office in New York City, unless otherwise agreed upon.
SALARY: Will be commensurate upon experience and is expected to vary between $33,000 and $36,000.
