National Identity Scheme Relaunched

The Mule | 18.08.2009 11:02 | Social Struggles

Home Secretary Alan Johnson last week re-launched the National Identity Scheme with the unveiling of a newly designed ID card.

The announcement came as part of the build-up to the Manchester trial, now due to start in the New Year. The government hope this will prove a success and be rolled out across the rest of the country in 2011 or 2012.

The Manchester launch date has already been put back from the autumn to January. Some say this is indicative of a scheme regularly hit by setbacks. It has already gone from compulsory to voluntary and many say the cost of the scheme is spiralling out of control.
