100,000 on the smash edo facebook group by Mayday 2010!

Smash EDO | 29.07.2009 10:12 | South Coast

The Smash EDO mayday event in Brighton is going to be the biggest ever demonstration the whole of the south coast has ever seen. But to make it the biggest we need to build up support that is why we are asking everyone to try to help to get one hundred thousand people on the smash EDO facebook group here before next May:

Preperations are already beginning to for the mayday 2010 smash EDO Mayday event in Brighton. We set up the smash EDO facebook group about 18 months ago to help build support for the campaign to get the arms factory EDO out of Brighton. But so far only a couple of hundred people have joined it so far. So please join it if you haven't already and invite as many of your friends as possible to join it too. We think we can easily reach 100,000 members by next Mayday and have a mamoth demonstration in Brighton to shut down EDO.

Terrible idea

29.07.2009 13:23

So we should trust facebook with the details of everyone who's planning on going to what the police will no doubt bill as a planned riot? lets just send our details direct to the police and be done with it... fuck facebook.

The facebook group is just for the campaign it is not for the demo!

The facebook smash edo group is just for the campaign it is not for the mayday Brighton smash edo demonstration! It doesn't matter if you are planning to go to the demo next year or not, or even if you live in the UK. It is a group to help build up support for the campaign to close down the edo arms factory in Brighton.

The police will also have one hell of a job sifting through 100,000 members of that group and tracking them all down.

Should people also not join the One Million against the BNP group as well incase they get raided by the police for planning an anti-facsist demo?

Man must abolish war or war will abolish mankind

30.07.2009 10:06

This is a campaign against war and the arms trade though. That is why we want to shut down the EDO arms factory. As the saying goes: "Man must abolish war or war will abolish mankind!" The facebook group is just to help build a mass movement against the EDO arms factory in Brighton. It would really put the wind up the arms industry if several hundred thousand people join the campaign against EDO.

Who advocates giving the state such easy access to the details of everyone who may attend? Is there no security culture any more? Why do you think sites like IM and we.riseup.net exist?

...and one hell of a job sifting through just 100,000 members? What do you think they are trained and paid to do? you clearly don't understand about databases. It's a very trivial job.

Think before getting people to do stupid stuff.

It is not stupid to get hundreds of thousands on the smash edo facebook group

31.07.2009 08:54

It is not stupid to get hundreds of thousands of people on the smash edo facebook group. The aim is to expand the campaign from a small tiny group of people into a mass movement of hundreds of thousands.

The aim is also so that when next years smash edo demo comes aroundwe have got far more people out on the streets of Brighton instead of only a couple of hundred who get shoved and pushed around by the police and don't manage to get any where near the EDO factory.

Also why are you so scared of anti-EDO activists being on facebook - it is not a crime to be against the arms trade! I would also put the wind up the arms industry a hell of a lot if a few hundred thousand people showed their support against the arms trade by joining this group!

If we really put our minds to it then we could get one million people on the smash edo facebook group so that at next years smash edo demo there are around one hundred thousand people out on the streets of Brighton.

Pointless

@"Should people also not join the One Million against the BNP group as well incase they get raided by the police for planning an anti-facsist demo?"

No, people shouldn't join it because it's totally fucking pointless. These things are just the internet equivalent of Socialist Worker hassling people to sign their pointless petitions. And since most people's facebook profile's are done with their real details, they will allow the cops to add to their no doubt extensive databases of real/imagined/potential troublemakers...

There should really be ten million on the smash edo facebook group.

01.08.2009 10:29

So if we managed to get ten million people from all around the world on the smash edo facebook group would that be a bad thing? If around ten million people joined the smash edo facebook group then it would mean that there were several hundred thousand people at the smash edo demonstration in Brighton next May because all those people on that group would get a mass email mailout telling them about the demonstration. Would that also be a bad thing?

Ten million would be much much worse....

Yes, it would. Its effectively gathering a huge database of people's political inclinations that is trivially easy for the police to access. And if its a worldwide thing then that includes people in countries with more obvious consequences for that than here, This is indeed a bad thing. And if you think several hundred thousand people will come to the Brighton demo no matter how many people sign up online then you're a little optimistic to say the least, I think you'll find very little relationship between online clicks and feet on the street...

Kev

No it wouldn't!

02.08.2009 12:08

If ten million people joined the smash EDO facebook group then it would massively raise the profile of the campaign to shut down the EDO arms factory and it really would mean massive numbers on the streets of Brighton.

Also the government does not keeps databases of peoples political views! Where the hell did you get that idea from. Where do you think this is Zimbabwe? Britain was still a democracy when I last looked. If you didn't know there are privacy features on facebook which prevent people who you have not added as friends from accessing all your details.

I wish people would stop trying to sabotage the campaign to build a "MASS" movement against the arms trade! Was the Poll Tax defeated by tiny cladestine groups or by a big open protest movement which encouraged millions to join it?

i'm glad you know what information mi5 does and doesn't keep, but hey, facebook's privacy settings will stop them if they try...sigh. This isn't about clandestine groups, by all means print a million leaflets and organise dozens of public events. Just give fucking facebook a miss...anyway enjoy the nice democracy you apparently live in.

It would cost a fortune to print a million leaflets!

03.08.2009 10:26

It would cost a fortune to print a million leaflets and an army of people to distribute them. While facebook is free and a much easier way of building up a mass movement against EDO.

This is how building a mass movement against EDO using facebook would work. You tell loads of people to join the smash edo group. They in turn tell all their friends on facebook to join it and so on. That way the campaign snowballs and introduces the campaign to loads of people who have never even heard about it before.

It is not just about getting political people on board but about raising the profile of the smash edo campaign to as many people as possible. You talk as if it is illegal to belong to any campaign group against the arms trade and war.
