Isn't it time Newcastle had an Indymedia?

Paul O'Hanlon | 27.07.2009 10:34 | Culture | Indymedia | Palestine | World

The North East needs an Indymedia.

Isn't it time Newcastle had an Indymedia?

Isn’t it about time that there was an Indymedia in the North East perhaps based in Newcastle? The North/North West of England has four IMCs – Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds/Bradford.

Newcastle has a very good pro Palestinian group but they have to use Indymedia Leeds, which is around 90 miles away. Apart from perhaps Wales the North East with its major towns of Newcastle, Darlington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough is the only region of Britain that has no Indymedia. Time it had one I feel.
I wrote a piece about Newcastle and had to put it out on Indymedia Leeds:

Hi,

There's been a lot of work going on this last 6 months for this very reason, and a lot of changes have taken place. Firstly, IMC York and IMC Leeds/Bradford merged to make best use of our combined resources, and then a commitment was made to expand our coverage and to become "IMC Northern England", in order to widen our coverage to include areas such as Newcastle, Hull, Scarborough, Wakefield, Huddersfield, and anywhere else that is not sufficiently covered by the existing city based IMC's.

Our official launch date is just a few days away, August 1st, where we will be operating a "Be the media" stall at Unity Day in Hyde Park, Leeds, and our current site at leedsbradford.indymedia.org.uk will be shut down to become an archive. From then on, our focus will be on anyone in the North of England who doesn't have Indymedia coverage elsewhere.

To this end, we made a commitment to hold meetings around the whole region, to ecourage local participation and awareness of why an Independent Media Centre is such an important resource. If anyone would like to host a Northern Indymedia meeting in Newcastle, or anywhere else in the north, please send an email to  imc-northern-contact@lists.indymedia.org and we'll discuss ways to make it happen. Also, our long term goal is to see more and more IMC's springing up all over this region so we will happily support any group who feels strong enough to "go it alone".

Anyone who wants to get involved in the Northern Indymedia project will find our collaboration tools at:

 https://we.riseup.net/imc-northern

and should join our mailing list at:

 http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-northern

to get discussing and get involved in all the exciting projects and challenges our new site is bringing up, including a planned radio project that is in the pipeline.

So not long to wait now til the big launch of Northern Indymedia on August 1st, when hopefully we can better provide coverage for those in Newcastle and beyond. Please bookmark the new address at

 http://northern-indymedia.org

and send your news there from that date onwards.

In Solidarity
