Swine Flu leaked from Lab - More Fears For Proposed Camden Lab

Stop Camden Bio Hazard and Animal Lab [Mandy and James] | 20.07.2009 03:24 | Animal Liberation | Bio-technology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

There are plans to build a deadly high level virus containment facility and animal testing lab in Kings Cross. The lab could be level 3 facility which means that it could contain deadly pathogens such as anthrax and bird flu. The lab has been criticised by MI5, MPs, councillors, business and local resdients. Now scientists have admitted that the deadly Swine Flu was leaked from a lab 3 decades ago.

Scientists have admitted that the strain of influenza known as "Swine Flu" which has killed 300 people was possibly leaked from a lab three decades ago. They believe that the flu strain could be realted to a strain leaked from a lab in Russia in the 1970s.

This shows that no lab is infallible and that Kings Cross is an unsuitable place for a deadly lab. Scientists from the NIMR have criticised the lab on safety grounds and approached the Camden New Journal. MI5 approached the Evening Standard regarding safety fears. No matter how impregnable the proposed lab there are always possibilties that transportation of deadly pathogens through built up London will pose a risk. Pathogens are transported using courier firms and even bicycle couriers carry deadly germs across the city.

This lab is a dangeous, ill thought out proposal and ought to be opposed.

I know you really don't want the Camden lab...

But.......... Will you stop posting 'wild' 'scary' claims that are (within this article) unsubstantiated.

You might as well publish claims like "In the event of an earthquake, experts claim, virses could leak from the Camden labs"......... no factual basis but you found a linky somewhere!

Here is the background to your story........ ie putting some facts behind your knee-jerk claims.

Firstly, your story is a Daily Mail story , and true to Daily Heil form, they provide little more information.
 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196507/Swine-flu-pandemic-caused-accidental-leak-laboratory.html

Thyey do mention the New England Journal of Medicine, the full report is here:
 http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/361/3/279

Yes there is mention of the possible Russian lab leak, however there are several other factors that are behind this outbreak:
"Although the immediate genetic event that led to the emergence of the new pandemic threat was a reassortment between two influenza A (H1N1) swine viruses, these two viruses were actually the products of at least four independent avian-to-mammalian cross-species transmissions, with at least four previous reassortments of gene segments among avian, human, and swine-adapted viruses (Figure 2). One consequence of this intertwined history is that S-OIV shares three gene segments with current seasonal human influenza A (H1N1) virus and three segments with human seasonal influenza A (H3N2) virus."

Upshot: Next time you want to rant against the Camden Lab, get your sources and facts straight..... you might be approaching the paranoid conspiracy level with this, but you will not gain any support re-hashing Daily Heil articles.

Bobs comment that,in the event of an earthquake, experts claim viruses could leak from the Camden labs etc. What evidence do you have of this being a possibility or not, since you seem adept at opening cans, what containment procedures are to be put in place in the event of such an event. What are the measures of isolation of contamination from air, waste water, soiled waste and cross contamination of the aforementioned twixt each or combinations of such. What are the procedures in the event of an attack on the structure and the evacuation plan in such an emergency.
Someone must have the answers ? Bob?

Virus labs should be on uninhabited islands

I don't believe that this particular virus leaked from lab because it was first found next to factory farm which is thus by far the most likely and explainable cause. The idea of a virus being leaked from a lab isn't fiction or hype though regardless if you dislike the Daily Mail. The idea of having a major virus lab in any city is obviously a crazy cost-cutting exercise. In the long run, Murphys law trumps Occams Razor.

OMG!!!!

Someone released the irony virus......... we are all doomed I tell ya, doomed!

I suppose If I wanted to go and find out about procedures I could, my point was that the first post was effectively lifted from the Daily Heil with NO REFERENCE at all. In the interest of drumming up any suport at all a half decent, fully referenced article would have been more effective.

Dear OMG [Panda]

We did not "lift our info from the Daily Mail". What we did was add the Daily Mail article to our myspace page.
As for drumming up support against the lab...if there is a leak from the lab [such as has happened with Swine Flu] then Daily Mail readers and writers will be affected every bit as much as anyone else by the consequences.
I suppose there could be a Daily Mail readers only special quarantine zone....

Cheers forrepying James, no offence meant but do you see the point I'm trying to make?

As for looking on your myspace page........... myspace page layouts make my eyes bleed so I rarely follow links to myspace!!
