March of Repentence, London 18/07/2009 - pictures.

A year after financial chaos spreads wildly throughout the economy and public and private institutions buckle under the weight of war, nepotism and corruption, people of faith gather in London to repent and show penitence for the transgression of remaining silent throughout.

The cost of silence.
The cost of silence.

The start.
The start.

Marching past Parliament.

War.
War.

Forgiveness for government.

A man prays.

A woman prays.

Holding up a bible.

Hands before prayer.
Hands before prayer.

A year after financial chaos spreads wildly throughout the economy and public and private institutions buckle under the weight of war, nepotism and corruption, people of faith gather in London to repent and show penitence for the transgression of remaining silent throughout.

They gather at Hyde Park and march through London all the while reciting and bearing witness to the cost of their own silence in the face of declining public and private standards before arriving at Trafalgar Square an hour later.

They listen to speakers describe the moral failings of the current government, attacks on people of the christian faith, immorality and violence in popular culture and the descent of the United Kingdom into lawlessness.

They then pray for forgiveness.

London, UK. 18/07/2009.

Nonsense

As the above comment says: No gods, no masters!

What is this nonsense on here for? Perhaps rather than doing as little as possible by praying to the invisible xenophobic, homophobic, and sexist man in the sky you could take direct action against capitalism and the government and achieve real results.

Bemused

An answer.

The images are commentary, not instruction or suggestion.

Try to look beyond the ends of your noses!

More on the "March of Repentance"

20.07.2009 12:03

The main organising site for the "March of Repentance" can be found at  http://www.repentuk.com

Their page on "Why Repent?" ( http://www.repentuk.com/html/why_repent.html) is intriguing (note: some quotes trimmed for space):

"Some of the areas I believe we are grieving God as a nation are:-
* Rejecting our laws that were based on Biblical standards and replacing them with laws directly opposed to Biblical principles
* Failing to uphold the value of the conventional family life and failing to raise our children with proper loving discipline [Often evangelical code for accessible divorce, laws against marital rape, acceptance of homosexuality, opposition to corporal punishment, etc.]
* A readiness to mock all the great institutions of our nation."

"We've lost our spiritual equilibrium. We have inverted our values. We have ridiculed the absolute truth of your word in the name of moral pluralism. We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism.

We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.

We've exploited the poor and called it a lottery. We've neglected the needy and called it self-preservation. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. In the name of choice, we have killed our unborn. In the name of right to life, we have killed abortionists."

A glance at the supporters list ( http://www.repentuk.com/html/supporters.html) gives a similar impression, with a smattering of Israel apologists thrown in for good measure. Similarly, their FAQ ( http://www.repentuk.com/html/faq.html) includes the following:

"Where did it start? Since the Garden of Eden, unregenerate man has rebelled against God. But evil got a big boost in the 60’s. In 1969, fresh from driving through the laws which have devalued human life, destroyed the family and exalted ungodly sex, the then Home Secretary Roy Jenkins said 'the permissive society is the civilised society'. It does not look very civilised to those who have fallen victim to it."

What we are seeing in this "March of Repentance" is a form of socially-conscious evangelicalism - one which recognises concerns for the poor and needy (while seeing them as utterly incapable of improving their own condition, and dependant on the charity of their betters), while still bringing with it most of the more unpleasant trappings of that particuar movement. Anti-abortion, anti-gay, and ultimately anti-working class as anything other than simple folk who should accept their station in life.

Incidentally, the site is registered to Christian Voice (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Voice_(UK) ), which says it all really.
