New Cambridge Social Centre Opened

Camridge anarchist | 14.07.2009 14:35 | Free Spaces | Cambridge

Occupy Cambridge is proud to announce the opening of the new cambridge social centre.

Occupy Cambridge, a (rather brilliant) group of squatters, anarchists, revolutionists, land rights types and general social misfits, last night "reclaimed" the disused bingo hall on hobson street .

The building will now be used as a social centre of some kind, although this is very much a blank canvas.

It a large space and is kitted out well for film showings.

The building is the old bingo hall on hobson street cambridge.
Come down and visit.

History of the old Gala Bingo Building

14.07.2009 17:05

There was a cinema on the site of the old Gala Bingo Hall on Hobson Street from 1921 called The Central Cinema(it was rebuilt in 1930 to give the current building probably after a fire). The first talkie in Cambridge was screened at The Central Cinema in 1929 and that talkie was "The Broadway Melody"

By 1972 (this date is disputed), the then Odeon, was shut down and converted into a bingo hall.

Police at the Centre

16.07.2009 14:24

We have just got word that the police have decided to pay a visit to the Cambridge Social Centre on Hobson St. The people inside know their rights, so let's hope the police know them too!

The space is well on its way to becoming an amazing social centre committed to radical social change and community organising- please lend it your support! We need people to get involved to help it realise its full potential. The current systems of power, which include the police, have failed our communities. We are setting up a radical alternative which is less oppressive, more sustainable, and much more dynamic and inspiring! Come by for a visit: if you're not a cop then come on in and have a cup of tea!

http://cambridgefreespaces.wordpress.com/ is the webpage we have set up for the space.

Inspired by the space

The Cambridge Social Centre
(our Claimbridge)

we really reclaimed the bingo
going wheels easy and making something

our floors were filled with starlight
we tested for the right
were makings something dutiful
were making terror bite
(less wireless)

shop less top less cop-press
consuming from the door

it really was unspoken how delicious a space can be
were making something womblike
were making harmony

it wouldn't have been Shamebridge
it would have been something good
it hasn't had it nascence
it hasn't been as it should

Oh Blamebridge making faces
in dayglo thru the door

and shamements on the floor

why couldn't we enjoy the carpet
why couldn't we bolt lock the door

we're caring not taking we're holding
the space has til now just been lack
we're making it likelier liking
we're making a roof on our back
we're making a space we can care for
for others and us for we too
we're holding the space for community
we're playing bingo and shout HOUSE!
